The Income Tax Department has made it mandatory for taxpayers to link their PAN (Permanent Account Number) with Aadhaar to be eligible for claiming income tax refunds. This directive is aimed at strengthening the verification process, eliminating duplicate PANs, and ensuring that refunds are issued only to genuine and validated taxpayers. The move is part of the government’s continued efforts to build a cleaner, more accountable tax infrastructure through Aadhaar-PAN integration.
According to the updated rules, returns filed with unlinked or inactive PANs will not be processed for refund issuance until the PAN is successfully linked with Aadhaar. This applies to all categories of taxpayers, including individuals, HUFs, and senior citizens (unless exempt under specific provisions). The refund system now checks the PAN-Aadhaar linkage status automatically before initiating any credit, ensuring that only authenticated PAN holders receive the benefits.
Taxpayers are advised to verify their PAN-Aadhaar linkage status through the official income tax portal and complete the linking process immediately if pending. Additionally, the bank account intended for the refund credit must be pre-validated and associated with the same PAN. Failure to comply may result in delays, refund rejection, or the return being flagged as defective. This policy reinforces the government’s commitment to data-driven compliance, faster processing, and error-free refund disbursement.
