The state government is considering a proposal to introduce biometric authentication as part of the Professional Tax (PT) registration process, especially for high-risk categories and new applicants flagged for verification. The move is aimed at strengthening identity validation, preventing fraudulent registrations, and improving the integrity of the state’s taxpayer database. If approved, the system would require fingerprint or Aadhaar-based verification at the time of enrolment or approval.
According to officials, biometric checks would be integrated with the existing PT portal and linked to UIDAI authentication services, ensuring that registrants are verified against government-issued identity records. This requirement may initially apply to individual professionals, proprietors, and entities with a history of tax defaults or mismatches. The measure is expected to deter impersonation and misuse of tax credentials, particularly in sectors where informal registrations are common.
Stakeholders have been invited to provide feedback before the rule is finalized, and pilot implementation is being planned in select districts. The department will ensure the availability of biometric kiosks and assisted registration facilities for users without access to personal digital tools. This initiative is part of the broader digitization and compliance monitoring reforms underway in the state’s tax administration.
