Over 150 residential societies across Chennai commemorated their annual Founders’ Day this weekend through neighborhood improvement projects, blending tradition with civic responsibility. The coordinated effort saw 4,000+ residents participate in activities ranging from heritage wall restorations in Mylapore to AI-powered waste audits in tech-centric OMR communities. Notably, the 92-year-old Santhome Heights Society transformed its celebration into a “Green Legacy” drive, planting 150 native saplings matching their founding year of 1932.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority partnered with societies to upgrade 15 public parks adjoining housing complexes, with residents contributing design inputs. “This is how urban communities should honor their history – by building better futures,” remarked Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan at Adyar’s Lakeside Estate ceremony. Several societies used the occasion to digitize their archives, creating virtual museums of Chennai’s residential evolution since the 1950s.
While most events focused on environmental stewardship, some societies addressed urban challenges – the Kotturpuram Residents’ Forum inaugurated a shared EV charging hub funded through crowd contributions. The celebrations concluded with inter-society competitions judged on sustainability impact, setting a new benchmark for meaningful community observances. With participation tripling since pre-pandemic years, Founders’ Day is emerging as Chennai’s most anticipated civic engagement event.
