Clubs Launch Mental Health Support Helplines

In a remarkable move toward mental well-being, social and community clubs across India are stepping up to provide mental health support through dedicated helplines. Amid rising anxiety, depression, and stress-related issues post-pandemic, clubs are now embracing a more compassionate role in society.

From Rotary Clubs to Lions Clubs and local youth collectives, several organizations have joined hands with mental health professionals to offer free and confidential counseling via helpline numbers. The initiative aims to break stigma and reach people in need—especially those in Tier-II and Tier-III cities where mental health services are scarce.

“We realized that while physical health camps are common, mental health is often overlooked,” said Anjali Mehra, president of a local Lions Club in Pune. “Our helpline is manned by trained counselors and provides support to anyone feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed.”

In Bengaluru, the Inner Wheel Club reported over 800 calls in the first month of launching their helpline, with issues ranging from academic pressure to domestic stress. Similarly, in Lucknow, student clubs at universities have introduced 24/7 support lines, especially for hostel residents and those away from family.

Experts applaud this grassroots effort. “Community-driven helplines can bridge the gap in India’s mental health infrastructure. Clubs are trusted by locals, making help more approachable,” said Dr. Arvind Menon, a clinical psychologist.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has expressed support, noting that such civil society initiatives complement national schemes like Kiran helpline and MANAS app.

As India battles a silent mental health crisis, these club-led helplines are emerging as lifelines—offering hope, one call at a time.
