Introduction
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allows members to access their savings and benefits through various types of claims. These claims cater to different financial needs and life events such as retirement, unemployment, illness, marriage, home purchase, and death. Each claim type is governed by specific rules under the EPF Scheme, EPS Scheme, and EDLI Scheme. Understanding the different claim types helps members make informed decisions and access timely financial assistance.
EPF Final Settlement (Form 19)
This claim is filed when an employee retires, resigns, or remains unemployed for over two months. It allows full withdrawal of the employee and employer contributions from the EPF account, along with accrued interest.
EPF Partial Withdrawal (Form 31)
Also known as an advance claim, Form 31 enables members to withdraw a portion of their EPF for specific purposes such as medical emergencies, marriage, education, home loan repayment, or house construction. This claim does not require job separation.
EPS Pension Withdrawal (Form 10C)
Used by members with less than 10 years of service who are resigning or being laid off, this form facilitates the withdrawal of the pension portion under the Employees’ Pension Scheme. Members with over 10 years of service are eligible for monthly pension benefits instead.
Monthly Pension Claim (Form 10D)
Applicable to members who have completed 10 or more years of service and have reached the pensionable age (usually 58 years), this form allows the member to start receiving monthly pension under the EPS.
Death Claims (Form 20, 10D, 5IF)
In case of a member’s death, the nominee/legal heir can file the following:
- Form 20: For claiming EPF balance
- Form 10D: For claiming monthly pension by family member
- Form 5IF: For claiming EDLI (Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance) benefits
PF Transfer Claim (Form 13)
When an employee changes jobs, this form is used to transfer the EPF and EPS balance from the old employer to the new one. This helps consolidate accounts and maintain continuity.
Advance for Unemployment (Form 31 – Unemployment Reason)
This claim type allows members who are unemployed for at least one month to withdraw 75% of their EPF balance. If unemployment continues for two months, the remaining 25% can also be withdrawn.
COVID-19 EPF Advance
EPFO introduced a special non-refundable COVID-19 advance to help members meet urgent financial needs during the pandemic. This claim is processed using Form 31 with “Outbreak of pandemic” as the reason.
Claim for Minor Nominee
When a nominee is a minor, the legal guardian can file the death claims on the minor’s behalf by submitting the required documentation and forms.
Correction or Re-submission Claims
These are re-filed claims due to incorrect bank details, name mismatch, or KYC errors in the original submission. EPFO allows re-submission after necessary corrections.
Conclusion
EPFO offers a wide array of claim types to address different phases and needs of a member’s life. Whether it’s retirement, health emergency, housing, unemployment, or death, each form is structured to provide rightful access to the member’s or their nominee’s financial entitlements. Understanding these claims empowers employees and ensures that EPF benefits are availed without delays or complications.
