In a landmark move to bolster the integrity and transparency of corporate tax filings, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced plans to incorporate blockchain technology into the digital filing infrastructure. This advanced security upgrade will apply to the e-filing of income tax returns (ITRs), tax audit reports, TDS filings, and key compliance submissions made through the Income Tax portal, especially those by companies under Form ITR-6. Blockchain will ensure that once data is submitted, it cannot be tampered with, altered, or accessed without a verifiable audit trail, making the system more secure and resistant to fraud.
The new system will rely on distributed ledger technology (DLT) to maintain a secure, immutable record of every transaction and submission, including document versions, timestamped uploads, and authentication actions by authorized users. Each filing will generate a unique blockchain hash that confirms its originality and timestamp, allowing both the tax department and the company to independently verify the authenticity of the filing history. This will significantly improve trust in digital compliance and enhance the credibility of audit and assessment processes.
The CBDT is working closely with technology partners to roll out blockchain-backed verification initially for high-risk filings, such as those involving large refunds, international transactions, or complex audit structures. Over time, the system will expand to cover all corporate filings. Companies are encouraged to keep their digital credentials secure, ensure accurate data entry, and maintain proper version control of all documents submitted, as blockchain will capture every change in real time. This move is seen as a transformative step in modernizing India’s tax infrastructure and making it one of the most digitally secure in the world.
