The Government of India, in collaboration with the Income Tax Department, has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on the correct and mandatory usage of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) across various financial, tax, and regulatory platforms. The campaign aims to ensure that individuals and businesses understand the critical role PAN plays in maintaining financial transparency and in complying with income tax laws, KYC norms, and monetary regulations.
As part of the initiative, the government is disseminating detailed information about when and where PAN is required, such as while opening bank accounts, filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs), making high-value cash transactions, investing in securities, buying immovable property, or applying for loans. Special attention is being given to the importance of linking PAN with Aadhaar, correcting outdated or duplicate PANs, and ensuring that PAN is consistently quoted in TDS, GST, and capital gains reports. Informational content is being circulated through radio, television, newspapers, official websites, and local outreach programs.
Officials have stated that the campaign will also highlight common mistakes made by taxpayers, such as quoting incorrect PAN, failing to update contact details, or using multiple PANs, all of which can lead to compliance issues, penalties, and transaction failures. The campaign encourages citizens to verify their PAN records, link them with Aadhaar, and utilize the Income Tax portal’s tools for validation and updates. The overall goal is to foster a more informed, compliant, and financially responsible taxpayer base across the country.
