Housing Societies Protest Against Water Tanker Mafias

Anger is boiling over in several Indian cities as housing societies protest against the dominance of water tanker mafias, alleging price manipulation, erratic supply, and strong-arm tactics amid ongoing water shortages. With municipal supply proving inadequate, especially during peak summer months, gated communities and apartment complexes are increasingly dependent on private water tankers—many of which operate outside regulatory oversight.

In Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and parts of Delhi-NCR, residents staged demonstrations, submitted petitions to civic bodies, and launched social media campaigns demanding stricter regulation and government intervention. Some societies report having to pay over ₹2,000 per tanker—almost double the normal rate—under pressure from monopolized local suppliers.

“We are being exploited daily. There’s no accountability, and we are left with no option but to pay or go without water,” said Deepika Menon, a resident of Whitefield, Bengaluru. “The tanker operators dictate the price and delivery schedule, often prioritizing higher bidders.”

Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) allege that several tanker networks have pushed out smaller suppliers and coordinate prices to extract maximum profits. In Mumbai suburbs, some societies claim they are forced to buy water from tankers controlled by politically connected groups.

Civic authorities have acknowledged the issue and promised remedial steps. “We are mapping tanker routes, capping pricing, and cracking down on illegal borewells used by these mafias,” said a senior BBMP official in Bengaluru.

Activists and urban planners argue that the crisis underlines the urgent need for sustainable water infrastructure, rainwater harvesting enforcement, and equitable groundwater management.

As protests gain momentum, housing societies are calling for a long-term solution—where access to water is treated not as a luxury controlled by cartels, but as a basic right ensured by transparent systems.
