How to Rectify PAN Errors in Income Tax Portal
Errors in your PAN (Permanent Account Number) can cause issues while filing ITR, verifying returns, or claiming refunds. The Income Tax e-Filing portal allows users to correct such PAN-related errors through specific processes. Ensuring PAN accuracy is critical for smooth tax compliance.
• Identify the Type of PAN Error
• Errors may include incorrect name, date of birth, gender, or father’s name in PAN records.
• Inactive or deactivated PAN due to Aadhaar-PAN mismatch may block return filing.
• Wrong PAN details linked in your income tax profile may lead to TDS and refund issues.
• Duplicate or multiple PANs can also cause discrepancies during return processing.
• Use the PAN Correction Facility (Online)
• Visit the NSDL (Protean) portal or UTIITSL: https://www.pan.utiitsl.com.
• Choose “Correction in PAN Data” option and fill the relevant online form.
• Provide your existing PAN and make corrections in only the required fields.
• Upload supporting documents (e.g., Aadhaar, passport) to validate your corrected information.
• Update PAN Details in e-Filing Profile
• Log in to using your PAN as the user ID.
• Go to ‘My Profile’ → ‘PAN Details’ section to cross-check your PAN information.
• If your PAN is already corrected on NSDL/UTIITSL but not reflected, wait for auto-sync.
• You can also contact the helpdesk to manually trigger a sync with the PAN database.
• Track the Status of PAN Correction
• After submission, you’ll receive a 15-digit acknowledgment number for tracking.
• Use the NSDL or UTIITSL portal to track the correction request using this number.
• PAN correction generally takes 7 to 15 working days to reflect across systems.
• Once updated, you’ll receive a revised PAN card and confirmation of updated details.
• Avoid PAN Errors in Future Transactions
• Always verify PAN details during KYC, form filling, or e-verification.
• Ensure your PAN matches with Aadhaar to avoid future linking issues.
• Keep a scanned and printed copy of the updated PAN card for quick access.
• Recheck PAN entries during ITR filing, TDS form submission, and investment declarations.
