Hello Auditor

NGOs Can Now Register for Auto-Tax Deduction Receipts

The Income Tax Department has introduced a new facility allowing registered non-governmental organizations to generate automatic tax deduction receipts for donors. This digital system enables NGOs to instantly issue 80G certificates, eliminating the manual process that previously caused delays and administrative hassles. Donors contributing to these organizations can now receive their tax exemption certificates immediately after making contributions, streamlining the donation process. The facility is available to NGOs that have obtained or renewed their 80G registration under the Income Tax Act.

To access this facility, NGOs must first register their authorized signatories on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Once registered, the system allows for real-time generation of receipts with unique identification numbers that can be verified by tax authorities. The automated process reduces paperwork and minimizes errors in certificate issuance, benefiting both organizations and donors. The department has provided detailed guidelines on its website explaining the step-by-step procedure for NGOs to enroll in this system.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to digitize and simplify tax-related processes for the non-profit sector. By reducing administrative burdens, the system aims to encourage more donations to legitimate charitable organizations. The automated receipts include all necessary details such as donor information, donation amount, and the applicable exemption percentage. Tax officials emphasize that this system will also help curb fraudulent practices where fake receipts were sometimes issued by unscrupulous entities.

While the new facility is mandatory for all 80G-registered NGOs, the department is conducting awareness campaigns to help smaller organizations adapt to the digital process. NGOs that fail to comply with the automated system risk losing their tax-exemption status. The move has been welcomed by many charitable organizations that previously struggled with manual receipt management, particularly during peak donation seasons. The system also allows donors to easily verify the authenticity of their tax exemption certificates through the income tax portal, adding an extra layer of transparency to the donation process.
