The Income Tax Department has begun issuing deactivation notices to individuals and entities whose Permanent Account Numbers (PANs) have remained dormant or inactive for an extended period. This move comes as part of the government’s initiative to clean up outdated taxpayer records, eliminate duplicate or unused PANs, and ensure a more accurate and streamlined tax database across the country.
The deactivation notices are being sent to PAN holders who have not filed Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for several consecutive years, have unlinked Aadhaar, or whose PANs show no recent financial activity. These notices instruct recipients to validate the necessity of their PAN by either updating KYC details, filing pending returns, or submitting a response through the e-filing portal within a specified timeline. Failure to respond may lead to the suspension or permanent deactivation of the PAN, which would impact the individual’s ability to conduct essential financial transactions.
Taxpayers are strongly advised to check their PAN status, ensure Aadhaar linkage, and review their filing history to avoid unintended deactivation. A deactivated PAN can result in the inability to open or operate bank accounts, make high-value investments, file taxes, or purchase property. This cleanup drive is part of the Income Tax Department’s effort to maintain a verified, up-to-date, and active national taxpayer identity system, in line with India’s push toward greater financial discipline and digital governance.
