The Government of India, in coordination with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Income Tax Department, has initiated the integration of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with vehicle registrations and toll payment systems. This reform is aimed at improving the traceability of high-value vehicle ownership, streamlining toll-based travel data, and enhancing financial transparency in transport-related transactions.
As part of this initiative, individuals and businesses purchasing vehicles above ₹10 lakh, or conducting frequent interstate commercial vehicle movements, will be required to link their PAN at the time of registration, FASTag activation, and high-value toll recharges. PAN linkage will enable authorities to cross-reference vehicle usage, ownership, and transaction records with income and tax declarations. The data will also be used to track compliance under provisions related to Section 139A of the Income Tax Act and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Additionally, PAN-verified toll data will be mapped for commercial transport operators and logistics companies, aiding in audit trails, fuel subsidy claims, and identification of undisclosed income or assets through patterns of luxury travel or vehicle usage. Vehicle dealerships, RTOs, and toll operators have been instructed to update their systems to accommodate this integration. Taxpayers are encouraged to ensure that their PAN is active, Aadhaar-linked, and consistent across vehicle-related records, marking another step in the government’s drive toward a digitally connected and compliant mobility infrastructure.
