The state government has released an official clarification confirming that agricultural workers are fully exempt from Professional Tax (PT) registration and payment. This announcement reaffirms provisions already present in the Professional Tax Act, which exclude individuals engaged solely in agricultural activities from the tax net. The exemption covers both seasonal and full-time workers directly involved in farming, cultivation, and related field operations.

According to the circular, landowners employing agricultural laborers for non-commercial farming activities are not required to register for PT on their behalf. The notification also emphasized that no PTEC or PTRC is needed for individual farmers or smallholder cultivators, provided their income stems exclusively from agricultural sources. Authorities have instructed field officers to avoid issuing notices or conducting inspections where the exemption clearly applies.

The government has advised eligible individuals and farm-based communities to retain proof of agricultural occupation, such as land records, tenancy agreements, or crop registration data, in case of future verification. Tax officials also clarified that those engaged in allied sectors such as agri-processing or commercial agri-trading may still be liable, depending on their specific business structure and income profile. The clarification aims to eliminate ambiguity and reinforce protections for the rural workforce.
