Resident Associations Seek Compensation for Road Delays

Multiple Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across Hyderabad and surrounding municipalities have filed formal complaints demanding compensation from local civic authorities for prolonged delays in road construction and repair works. The affected residents claim that stalled infrastructure projects have not only disrupted daily commutes but have also led to property damage, health hazards, and economic losses.

The RWAs from areas including Miyapur, Gachibowli, and Nagole allege that despite repeated assurances and budget allocations, key road-widening and resurfacing projects remain incomplete months beyond their deadlines. With roads dug up and left unattended, residents are dealing with accidents, restricted vehicle access, poor drainage, and soaring dust levels.

“We pay property taxes regularly and expect basic civic amenities. Due to these delays, elderly residents have fallen, vehicles have been damaged, and ambulances can’t reach on time,” said Renu Varma, President of the Lakeview Colony RWA. “We are now demanding compensation and written accountability.”

Legal notices have been sent to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and relevant contractors, citing breach of public duty and negligence. Several RWAs are also exploring public interest litigation (PIL) options to escalate the matter to state-level authorities.

In response, GHMC officials acknowledged the delays but attributed them to monsoon disruptions, pending utility relocations, and contractor issues. “We are expediting the pending works and will issue a revised completion schedule shortly,” said a senior engineer.

Urban planning experts emphasize that such civic delays have larger consequences on urban mobility, air quality, and economic productivity. “Delays hurt more than convenience — they impact health and business. Compensation demands are a sign that citizens are asserting their rights,” said Prof. Anil Joshi of Osmania University.

As frustration grows, civic bodies may face mounting pressure to not only accelerate works but also establish a grievance-based compensation policy.
