In a landmark initiative to empower marginalized communities, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in collaboration with state governments, has disbursed Recognition Grants to over 300 societies operating in tribal regions across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. These grants aim to boost the work of local self-help groups, cooperative societies, and educational associations that have played a critical role in advancing social welfare and indigenous rights.
The financial assistance, ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh per society, has been granted to support activities such as tribal education, skill training, women’s empowerment, traditional crafts promotion, and forest-based livelihood development.
“These societies are the backbone of grassroots transformation in tribal belts,” said Union Tribal Affairs Secretary Deepak Kumar. “The grants recognize not just their service, but their potential to scale up meaningful impact.”
In Jharkhand’s Gumla district, a women-led forest produce cooperative plans to expand its operations using the grant to include value-added packaging and digital marketing. In Odisha’s Kandhamal region, an education society has announced the launch of free residential coaching for tribal students preparing for competitive exams.
Beneficiary societies have been selected based on their track record, community outreach, and alignment with local development priorities. An independent evaluation committee was constituted to vet applications and recommend recipients.
Activists and development experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a long-overdue recognition of indigenous leadership in rural governance. “For decades, these societies have worked silently. This support helps amplify their efforts,” said tribal rights advocate Lata Munda.
Officials confirmed that the grant program will be scaled annually, with follow-up audits to ensure transparency and impact assessment.
This marks a positive shift toward inclusive policymaking that places tribal communities at the center of development dialogues.
