The Income Tax Department has issued an advisory urging all taxpayers to validate their PAN (Permanent Account Number) before proceeding with the filing of their Income Tax Returns (ITR). This step has been emphasized as critical to ensuring error-free submission, smooth processing of returns, and timely issuance of refunds. The validation of PAN helps avoid discrepancies in the tax filing system and ensures that all linked data, such as Aadhaar, bank accounts, and income statements, remains consistent and legally compliant.
According to the advisory, taxpayers must ensure that their PAN is active, not duplicated, and properly linked to Aadhaar, as mandated under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. If a PAN is found to be inactive, invalid, or not Aadhaar-linked, the return may be rejected, or the taxpayer may face restrictions on processing benefits like refund credits, tax adjustments, or verification of TDS claims. The department has enhanced backend checks to automatically flag discrepancies, making validation an essential pre-filing step.
To validate PAN, users can access the e-Filing portal, use the “Verify Your PAN” tool, and confirm that all demographic details—such as name, date of birth, and Aadhaar status—are accurate. Taxpayers are also encouraged to correct any errors in personal data, address duplicate PAN issues, and update their contact details for receiving OTPs and official communication. This proactive measure ensures seamless compliance and supports a more secure and efficient tax filing environment.
