In a bid to enhance the efficiency of toll collection and minimize transaction delays, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a nationwide training program for toll plaza staff focused on digital transaction handling. With a significant shift toward electronic tolling systems like FASTag, the training is designed to equip staff with the technical know-how to manage RFID-based systems, troubleshoot common issues, and assist commuters unfamiliar with digital payment methods. The move is expected to reduce human errors, increase transaction speed, and improve the overall commuter experience at toll booths.
The training modules include practical sessions on using hand-held FASTag scanners, resolving recharge-related queries, updating vehicle information in the system, and maintaining real-time coordination with the central control room. Special emphasis is also being placed on customer service skills, ensuring staff can communicate effectively with drivers facing digital transaction failures or unfamiliarity with electronic tolling protocols. NHAI is collaborating with technical partners and payment solution providers to ensure the curriculum is up-to-date and tailored to on-ground realities faced by toll operators.
This initiative comes at a time when over 98 percent of toll transactions on national highways are already being conducted through FASTag. However, issues such as tag misreads, insufficient wallet balances, and user interface confusion continue to cause bottlenecks. By empowering toll plaza personnel with the right skills, the government aims to fully eliminate manual toll collection over time and transition to a seamless, cashless highway network. The training program is being rolled out in phases across high-traffic corridors and is expected to cover all toll plazas by the end of the year.
