The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory for companies to submit an audit checklist alongside their income tax return (ITR) filings, starting from the current assessment year. This checklist must be submitted as part of the Form 3CD (Tax Audit Report) filing process and is intended to enhance the thoroughness and transparency of corporate audits. The audit checklist will act as a supporting document that confirms all statutory audit steps, disclosures, and reconciliations have been properly executed before final submission.
The checklist includes critical items such as verification of related party transactions, matching of GST and income tax data, validation of depreciation claims, loan disclosures, and reconciliation of Form 26AS and TDS records. It must also cover compliance with Sections 44AB (tax audit), 40A(3) (cash payments), and 269SS/269T (loan acceptance and repayment in cash). Tax auditors will be responsible for completing and digitally signing the checklist, confirming the accuracy and completeness of the audit exercise, and the return data filed by the company.
The e-filing portal has been updated to include a dedicated section for uploading the checklist along with Form 3CD, and submissions without it may be treated as defective returns under Section 139(9). Companies and their audit firms are advised to start preparing these checklists early in the return filing process to avoid delays or rejections. This mandatory checklist aims to instill greater audit discipline, reduce reporting lapses, and support the CBDT’s data-driven approach to corporate tax assessments.
