Hello Auditor

PT Rules for Cooperative Societies Updated

The state government has issued a fresh notification updating the Professional Tax (PT) rules applicable to cooperative societies, to clarify compliance responsibilities and align procedures with other regulated business entities. Under the revised framework, all registered cooperative societies engaging salaried employees or earning income through trade, manufacturing, or service activities must obtain a PT Registration Certificate (PTRC) and comply with deduction and filing obligations.

According to the updated rules, cooperative societies must deduct PT from employees’ salaries as per the applicable slab and remit the same monthly or quarterly, based on the total number of employees. The societies are also required to obtain a Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC) if they generate taxable income through independent activities, even without hired staff. Failure to comply may attract penalties, interest, and disqualification from state-aided schemes.

The tax department has urged cooperative societies to review their current compliance status and update records immediately through the state PT portal. District cooperative registrars have also been directed to circulate the revised rules and assist societies in fulfilling their tax obligations. This update aims to bring greater consistency in enforcement and ensure equitable contribution from all income-generating entities.
