Definition and purpose
- Dependent benefits under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESIC) scheme refer to monthly financial support provided to the dependents of a deceased insured person.
- These benefits are granted when the death occurs due to an employment-related injury or occupational disease.
- The objective is to provide social security to the family members who were financially dependent on the insured person.
- This is a long-term pension-like benefit administered by the ESIC.
- It ensures that the legal dependents receive sustained income in case of such loss.
Eligible dependents
- Widow of the deceased insured person until remarriage.
- Minor legitimate or adopted children up to the age of 25 years.
- Unmarried daughters till marriage or 25 years, whichever is earlier.
- Dependent parents, especially the mother, in the absence of spouse and children.
- Other family members as notified, based on dependency and eligibility under the scheme.
Rate and mode of payment
- The total benefit is generally 90% of the average daily wages of the deceased.
- This amount is shared among all eligible dependents as per fixed ratios.
- The benefit is disbursed monthly into the bank accounts of each eligible recipient.
- Payments continue as long as the dependent meets the eligibility conditions.
- In case of remarriage, marriage, or death of the dependent, the benefit is stopped.
