A coalition of 17 prominent industry associations, including FICCI, NASSCOM, and the Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs, has launched a nationwide campaign to achieve 40% women’s representation in organizational leadership by 2027. The “EqualSeat” initiative comes as government data reveals only 12.3% of society/association executive roles are currently held by women. The program will establish regional mentorship hubs, conduct leadership bootcamps, and maintain a public dashboard tracking gender parity metrics across 5,000+ member organizations.
The campaign introduces a 3-tier certification system (Bronze/Silver/Gold) recognizing associations that meet progressive representation benchmarks. Participating organizations must implement measures like blind recruitment for committees, reserved board seats, and flexible meeting schedules. Early adopters include the Indian Medical Association and All India Banking Council, which have already amended their bylaws to mandate at least one woman office-bearer in each regional chapter.
While the initiative has garnered cross-party political support, some traditional trade bodies have raised concerns about “forced parity.” In response, the coalition has developed sector-specific roadmaps accounting for varying baseline demographics. The Women and Child Development Ministry has pledged ₹28 crore in matching grants for associations implementing training programs, with special provisions for rural industry collectives.
