Hello Auditor

What are dependent benefits under ESIC?

Definition and purpose

  • Dependent benefits under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESIC) scheme refer to monthly financial support provided to the dependents of a deceased insured person.
  • These benefits are granted when the death occurs due to an employment-related injury or occupational disease.
  • The objective is to provide social security to the family members who were financially dependent on the insured person.
  • This is a long-term pension-like benefit administered by the ESIC.
  • It ensures that the legal dependents receive sustained income in case of such loss.

Eligible dependents

  • Widow of the deceased insured person until remarriage.
  • Minor legitimate or adopted children up to the age of 25 years.
  • Unmarried daughters till marriage or 25 years, whichever is earlier.
  • Dependent parents, especially the mother, in the absence of spouse and children.
  • Other family members as notified, based on dependency and eligibility under the scheme.

Rate and mode of payment

  • The total benefit is generally 90% of the average daily wages of the deceased.
  • This amount is shared among all eligible dependents as per fixed ratios.
  • The benefit is disbursed monthly into the bank accounts of each eligible recipient.
  • Payments continue as long as the dependent meets the eligibility conditions.
  • In case of remarriage, marriage, or death of the dependent, the benefit is stopped.

Documents required for claiming

  • Death certificate of the insured person.
  • Post-mortem report or ESIC accident report, if applicable.
  • Proof of employment injury or occupational disease certified by ESIC.
  • Legal heir certificate or dependency proof.
  • Bank details, Aadhaar, and photographs of the dependents.

Procedure for claiming dependent benefits

  • The claim must be submitted using the designated ESIC form through the local office.
  • Dependents can submit the claim directly or through the last employer.
  • ESIC verifies the employment injury, contribution records, and family details.
  • Upon approval, the benefit is sanctioned and payment is started.
  • Regular verification may be conducted to ensure continued eligibility.
