Hello Auditor

What is the PF number format?

Understanding the PF Number.

  • The PF number is a unique identifier for an employee’s provident fund account.
  • It is assigned by the employer when the employee is registered under EPF.
  • This number reflects the establishment and member details.
  • It is different from the Universal Account Number (UAN), which remains constant across jobs.
  • PF number changes with each new employer, but is linked under the same UAN.

Old PF Number Format.

  • The old format includes region code, office code, establishment code, and employee code.
  • Example format: TN/MAS/1234567/0001234.
  • TN = Region code (State), MAS = Office code (EPFO office location).
  • 1234567 = Establishment code (company’s unique number).
  • 0001234 = Individual employee/member serial number in the organization.

Revised PF Number Format (Post-UAN Introduction).

  • The new format is aligned with the 11-digit numeric Member ID, compatible with UAN.
  • It removes the regional code and uses a numeric-only structure.
  • The number is now auto-generated and tracked digitally.
  • It simplifies integration with UAN for online claim and transfer services.
  • Each new job generates a new Member ID linked to the same UAN.

Purpose and Usage of PF Number.

  • Required to track contributions, withdrawals, and transfers.
  • Used by employers while filing monthly EPF returns.
  • Helps EPFO identify the exact employment history of a member.
  • Necessary for filling forms like Form 13 (transfer) and Form 19 (withdrawal).
  • Should be preserved by employees for reference during employment and retirement.

Points to Remember.

  • Always link your PF number to the correct UAN to avoid confusion.
  • If unsure of the format, refer to your salary slip or consult HR.
  • Use the PF number to check passbook entries and contribution status.
  • Keep track of PF numbers from previous employers for transfer requests.

PF number is case-insensitive but must match the registered sequence.
