Digital NGO Directory to List Verified Section 8 Companies
In a major step toward improving transparency and fostering public trust, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has announced the launch of a Digital NGO Directory that will exclusively list verified Section 8 companies operating across India. The initiative is designed to provide a centralized, government-backed platform where citizens, corporates, and donors can access authenticated information about non-profit companies registered under the Companies Act, 2013.
The directory will include essential details such as the company’s registration number, date of incorporation, sector of operation, CSR registration status, compliance score, and financial disclosures. It will also indicate whether the entity holds valid certifications under Section 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act, which are key for tax exemptions and donor benefits.
Only Section 8 companies that are up-to-date with statutory filings, including annual returns (MGT-7), financial statements (AOC-4), and CSR compliance reports, will be eligible for listing. This vetting process ensures that the directory becomes a trusted source for identifying genuinely active and law-abiding non-profits. Companies under scrutiny, struck off, or flagged for irregularities will be excluded.
The portal is expected to streamline CSR partnerships, simplify due diligence for corporate donors, and help the general public verify the legitimacy of charitable organizations before making contributions. It will also promote fair competition and recognition among Section 8 companies by making governance and performance data publicly accessible.
Non-profit leaders and transparency advocates have praised the move as a long-overdue tool for combating fraud and enhancing accountability in the sector. The Digital NGO Directory marks a significant advancement in India’s digital governance infrastructure, empowering stakeholders to make informed, ethical, and impactful decisions in the philanthropic ecosystem.
