Authorities have initiated strict legal action against multiple cases of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) misuse, where unauthorized individuals fraudulently used digital signatures to file false documents and access confidential data. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the security protocols followed by some users and intermediaries in handling DSCs.
Investigations revealed that in several instances, digital keys were shared without proper safeguards, leading to unauthorized access and forged submissions on official portals. Legal experts emphasize that misuse of DSCs is a punishable offense under the Information Technology Act, 2000, which considers digital signatures as legally equivalent to handwritten ones.
In response, regulators have advised organizations to enforce strict access control, internal audits, and user accountability when dealing with DSCs. Professionals and companies are also being urged to avoid sharing tokens or credentials and to immediately report any suspicious activity to avoid liability and potential penalties.
