Hello Auditor

How to claim sickness benefit?

Confirm eligibility for sickness benefit

  • Ensure the insured person has paid contributions for at least 78 days in two consecutive contribution periods.
  • The employee must have a valid IP number and active status in the ESIC system.
  • Sickness must be certified by an ESIC-authorized medical officer or doctor.
  • The benefit is payable only for certified days of illness.
  • The insured person should not be receiving wages during the leave period.

Visit an ESIC dispensary or hospital

  • The insured person must report to the nearest ESIC dispensary or designated medical facility.
  • Consultation must be done with an ESI-affiliated doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
  • The doctor will examine and issue a medical certificate or “sickness certificate”.
  • This certificate specifies the number of days the employee is unfit to work.
  • The certificate must be preserved and submitted for claiming benefits.

Submit Form 9 and medical certificate

  • Fill out Form 9 (claim form for sickness benefit) with the insured person’s details.
  • Attach the medical certificate issued by the ESIC doctor.
  • Submit both documents to the nearest ESIC branch office within the prescribed time.
  • The documents may also be submitted through the employer.
  • Multiple certificates must be submitted if the illness period is extended.

Await verification and approval

  • ESIC will verify the claim based on the contribution status and medical advice.
  • If approved, the sickness benefit is processed and sanctioned.
  • Any discrepancies or missing documents may lead to delays or rejections.
  • The employee may be called for a follow-up or verification visit.
  • Notifications of approval or rejection may be shared through post or in person.

Receive benefit payment

  • Once approved, the benefit is disbursed directly into the employee’s registered bank account.
  • The sickness benefit is paid at 70% of average daily wages for the certified period.
  • Payment is typically made in bi-weekly installments for long-term sickness.
  • Retain bank receipts and acknowledgment for future reference.
  • Continue submitting follow-up certificates if the illness persists.
