The Income Tax Department has officially released the updated TAN filing guidelines for the financial year 2025 to ensure better compliance and standardization among tax deductors and collectors. These new directives aim to provide clarity on the TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) filing requirements under the Income Tax Act, 1961. All entities possessing a valid Tax Dedication and Collection Account Number (TAN) are required to adhere strictly to the procedural timelines and documentation formats specified in the revised guidelines.
As per the circular, quarterly statements must be filed on or before the designated due dates: July 31 for Q1, October 31 for Q2, January 31 for Q3, and May 31 for Q4. These filings should be made through the TRACES portal or NSDL e-Gov portal, using valid Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) or Aadhaar-based authentication. The department has reiterated that accurate PAN quoting, challan matching, and error-free data entry are essential to prevent notices and penalties under Sections 234E and 271H of the Income Tax Act.
The updated TAN guidelines also introduce automated correction mechanisms and pre-validation features, allowing users to rectify errors in TDS/TCS returns without manual interventions. These features are expected to ease the compliance burden and increase the accuracy of filings. Tax deductors and collectors are encouraged to review the official handbook provided on the department’s portal and consult with registered tax professionals for timely and proper compliance.
