The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has introduced a revised set of encryption standards for Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) to bolster data security and prevent cyber vulnerabilities in high-risk sectors. The updated framework mandates the use of stronger cryptographic algorithms and extended key lengths, ensuring that digital signatures remain resistant to sophisticated hacking attempts and unauthorized tampering.

Under the new standards, all Certifying Authorities (CAs) issuing DSCs will be required to adopt 2048-bit RSA encryption or higher, with enhanced hashing protocols for secure digital communication. These changes are aimed at reinforcing the confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation of documents signed using DSCs, particularly in sensitive areas such as finance, defense, healthcare, and legal services. The NIC has also set timelines for compliance, encouraging rapid adoption of these enhanced security layers.

Cybersecurity experts have welcomed the move, noting that the updates place India in alignment with global best practices for digital authentication. With increasing reliance on DSCs across public and private platforms, these new encryption benchmarks are expected to reduce data breach risks, increase trust in e-signatures, and secure India’s digital ecosystem against emerging threats.
