Online Certification Program for Society Management Rolled Out

The program, rolled out on the National Urban Learning Platform (NULP), aims to equip Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), cooperative housing society office bearers, and aspiring society managers with essential legal, administrative, and financial knowledge. The curriculum includes modules on society by-laws, budgeting, dispute resolution, digital record-keeping, and environmental compliance.

Officials say the move is in response to growing complaints about mismanagement, non-compliance with regulatory norms, and lack of financial transparency in thousands of housing societies across India.

“Societies are micro-governance units and need structured, accountable management. This certification will ensure that office bearers are trained and better informed,” said Alok Mittal, Joint Secretary, Housing and Urban Affairs.

Participants can enroll through an online portal and complete the self-paced course over 4–6 weeks. Upon completion, certified members will receive a government-recognized credential, which some states may make mandatory for new committee formations.

Early participants from cities like Pune, Noida, and Chennai have welcomed the initiative, noting that it adds much-needed clarity to the complex operational responsibilities societies face today.

Experts from civic planning backgrounds believe this program could become a game-changer. “This initiative can drastically improve accountability and community trust if implemented across the country,” said architect and planner Rina Das.

With over 5 lakh cooperative and housing societies operating nationwide, the certification aims to usher in a new era of informed, transparent, and legally compliant local governance.
