Societies Start Community Composting Projects

In a major stride toward sustainable living, housing societies across India are rolling out community composting projects to manage organic waste and reduce pressure on municipal landfills. These initiatives, supported by civic bodies and green NGOs, are gaining momentum in metro cities like Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.

Under the projects, residents segregate kitchen waste at source and deposit it into designated composting units installed within society premises. These include aerobic bins, tumbler composters, and pit-based systems, depending on the space and scale. The compost generated is then used in community gardens, potted plants, or shared with nearby green spaces.

“Our society generates nearly 60 kilos of organic waste daily. With composting, we’ve turned that problem into a resource,” said Revathi Menon, President of the Green Oaks Cooperative Society in Bengaluru. “Residents are now more aware and actively participate.”

Local municipal corporations are encouraging the movement by offering subsidies on composting equipment, training workshops, and collection support for non-compostables. Some cities have also introduced awards for top-performing societies under initiatives like Swachh Survekshan.

In Pune, a federation of societies has created a shared composting hub with rotating responsibilities, further cutting down costs. Meanwhile, in Noida, RWAs are collaborating with school eco-clubs to promote composting awareness among children.

Environmentalists see community composting as a critical tool in India’s waste management strategy. “With 50% of urban waste being biodegradable, composting at source is both logical and impactful,” said waste management expert Dr. Aarti Sharma.

As awareness spreads and models succeed, community composting is quickly becoming a symbol of responsible urban citizenship—where waste isn’t discarded, but transformed into a solution.
