In a proactive move to support entrepreneurship and simplify compliance, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has established a dedicated Special Tax Cell for Startups and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This newly formed cell aims to address sector-specific tax challenges, facilitate faster grievance redressal, and offer expert guidance on tax-related queries. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to promote ease of doing business and reduce procedural burdens on emerging enterprises.
The Special Tax Cell will act as a centralized contact point for handling issues related to Section 80-IAC (startup tax exemption), angel tax queries, notices under scrutiny, and clarification on advance tax and TDS obligations. Startups and MSMEs will be able to raise concerns through a designated email and portal interface and receive tailored responses within committed timelines. A dedicated team of officers with expertise in startup finance, innovation ecosystems, and SME taxation will staff the unit, ensuring sector-sensitive handling of cases.
Additionally, the CBDT is rolling out awareness campaigns and FAQs to help eligible businesses understand compliance requirements, tax holidays, and return filing protocols. The tax cell will also coordinate with regulatory bodies like DPIIT and GSTN to enable synchronized support. This initiative is expected to reduce litigation, improve trust in tax administration, and encourage voluntary compliance, offering young businesses a clearer, more supportive pathway to financial and regulatory success.
