Hello Auditor

What documents are needed for toll exemptions?

Government Notification-Based Exemptions

  • Toll exemptions are provided under the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.
  • Vehicles belonging to specific authorities or categories are eligible.
  • A list of exempted categories is officially notified by the government.
  • Exemptions apply to both central and state toll plazas.
  • Proper documentation is mandatory to claim exemption at toll booths.

Identity Proof of the Vehicle Owner or Occupant

  • A valid government-issued photo ID must be presented when seeking exemption.
  • This includes Aadhaar card, driving license, or official ID cards.
  • In the case of VIPs, personal staff must carry a copy of the identity proof.
  • Identity documents must match the registration and purpose of travel.
  • Verification is done by toll personnel before granting exemption.

Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)

  • The original or a copy of the RC is required for exemption verification.
  • It must clearly state the type and ownership of the vehicle.
  • Vehicles registered under government departments must be marked accordingly.
  • Defense or paramilitary vehicles must carry official registration codes.
  • The RC should not indicate any commercial use, unless specified.

Authorization Letters or Official Orders

  • Vehicles claiming exemption for duty purposes must carry a work order.
  • This includes letters from government departments or ministries.
  • Medical emergency vehicles may need hospital or dispatch documentation.
  • Letters must be recent, valid, and issued by competent authorities.
  • They must clearly state the reason and duration of exemption.

Special Exemption Passes and Local Permits

  • Monthly or annual exemption passes may be issued by toll authorities.
  • Local residents near a toll plaza may carry residence proof for exemption.
  • Such passes are issued with supporting ID and address documents.
  • Farmers and essential service providers may also apply for temporary permits.
  • All passes must be visibly displayed on the vehicle windshield.
