Understanding the Token Password (PIN)
- A DSC token is protected by a PIN or password that grants access to the private key.
- This password is required for signing, encryption, and accessing certificate details.
- If forgotten or entered incorrectly multiple times, the token may get locked.
- Resetting the password is necessary to regain access and functionality.
- The process depends on the type and brand of the USB token.
Using Token Management Utility
- Each token provider (such as ePass, ProxKey, or WatchData) has a dedicated management utility.
- Open the token utility software installed on your system.
- Insert the DSC token into a USB port and wait for it to be detected.
- Navigate to the option labeled ‘Change PIN’ or ‘Reset PIN’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
Requirements for PIN Reset
- If the PIN is known, it can be changed easily through the utility.
- If the PIN is forgotten, administrative access or initialization may be required.
- Some tokens allow resetting using an admin PIN or master password.
- Without admin credentials, the token must be initialized, which deletes existing certificates.
- After initialization, a new DSC must be installed or reapplied.
Steps to Reset PIN (General Procedure)
- Plug in the token and launch the utility software.
- Select the token from the list of available devices.
- Choose ‘Reset PIN’ or ‘Initialize Token’ if the PIN is forgotten.
- Enter the admin password, if prompted.
- Set a new user PIN and confirm the change.
Important Considerations
- Resetting or initializing the token permanently deletes stored certificates.
- Back up important data or prepare to reissue the DSC before initialization.
- Reapply for DSC reinstallation if certificates are lost during the reset.
- Contact the token provider or Certifying Authority for assistance if needed.
- Always keep the PIN confidential and avoid repeated incorrect attempts.
