When Can a Minor Claim EPF.
- A minor is eligible to receive EPF benefits when nominated by a deceased member.
- The claim is processed only if the minor’s name is officially registered in Form 2.
- The claim arises due to the death of the employee while in service or post-retirement.
- The amount is payable under the Provident Fund, Pension Scheme, and EDLI benefits.
- The process is carried out through the minor’s legal or natural guardian.
Role of Guardian in the Claim Process.
- A natural guardian (father or mother) can claim the amount on behalf of the minor.
- If both parents are not available, a court-appointed legal guardian is required.
- The guardian must submit valid identity proof and relationship documents.
- A guardianship certificate is mandatory if the claimant is not a natural parent.
- All documentation must match the details in EPF nomination records.
Required Documents for the Claim.
- Death certificate of the EPF member.
- Form 20 (Provident Fund Claim), Form 10D or 10C (for Pension), and Form 5IF (for EDLI).
- Birth certificate or school certificate of the minor for age proof.
- Valid ID and address proof of the guardian.
- Guardianship certificate (if applicable) and cancelled cheque or bank passbook copy.
Submission and Verification.
- The claim form and documents must be signed by the guardian.
- Attestation by the employer is needed if submitted manually.
- Verification is carried out by the EPFO office after submission.
- Any discrepancy may require resubmission or clarification.
- Once approved, the amount is credited to the bank account specified by the guardian.
Important Considerations.
- Claims on behalf of minors are treated with legal sensitivity.
- A separate form is not needed if the nomination already specifies a guardian.
- Claims may take longer if guardianship verification is pending.
- Keep all original documents ready for authentication during the process.
Funds are released only after successful scrutiny and legal compliance.
