Hello Auditor

What is the procedure to revise professional tax returns?

Check State-Specific Revision Rules

  • Each state has its provisions regarding the revision of professional tax returns.
  • Not all states permit revision of returns once filed; some allow it within a limited timeframe.
  • Before proceeding, confirm whether your state permits revision and under what conditions.
  • Common reasons for revision include incorrect figures, wrong tax period, or unreported employees.
  • Returns can only be revised before the due date or within the revision window, as prescribed.

Identify the Error inthe  Original Return

  • Review the filed return and note the discrepancy, such as underreported tax, wrong PAN, or payment mismatch.
  • Verify related documents like payment challans, salary records, and employee data.
  • Ensure the error was genuine and not a result of multiple system filings.
  • Revision is permitted only for non-fraudulent and correctable mistakes.
  • Maintain a copy of the original return before proceeding with changes.
Log inn to the State’s Professional Tax Portal
  • Use your PTRC (for employers) or PTEC (for self-employed) credentials to log in.
  • Go to the section labeled “Return Filing”, “Revised Return”, or “Amend Return”.
  • Select the relevant return period and choose the option to revise.
  • Not all returns will have revision options available—check the status before attempting.
  • Some portals require prior approval or reference to the original acknowledgment number.

Update the Return Details

  • Enter the correct details, such as employee figures, tax amounts, or payment references.
  • Attach supporting documents or corrected data files if required.
  • Review all entries carefully to avoid repeated revisions.
  • Some systems allow uploading of revised return formats like Excel or XML sheets.
  • Save the draft and verify totals before submission.

Submit and Generate Acknowledgment

  • After correction, submit the revised return online.
  • A new acknowledgment number or receipt will be generated for the revised return.
  • Save and download the updated filing proof for audit or future reference.
  • If manual submission is required, take a printout and submit it at the tax office with supporting documents.
  • Ensure compliance with the revised due date, if applicable, to avoid penalties.

Post-Submission Compliance

  • Reconcile the revised return with the original tax payments made.
  • If additional tax is due, make the short payment immediately with applicable interest.
  • If an excess payment was made earlier, file a refund request as per state rules.
  • Keep both original and revised returns on record for future audits.
  • Track state notifications for any changes in revision guidelines.
