Hello Auditor

What is the TAN update schedule?

No Fixed Periodic Update Requirement

  • TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is valid for life and does not require routine renewal or periodic updates.
  • However, updates must be made immediately when there are changes in key details such as name, address, PAN linkage, or authorized signatory.

On Change of Business Name or Structure

  • If there is a change in the legal name, company structure, or constitution (e.g., from sole proprietorship to partnership), the TAN details must be updated.
  • This ensures continuity in TDS compliance and prevents mismatches in filings or audits.

On Relocation or Jurisdiction Change

  • When a business relocates to another city or state, especially if it changes jurisdiction or Assessing Officer (AO) code, the address and AO details should be updated.
  • This helps maintain accurate departmental records and facilitates correct communication.

On Change of Authorized Person

  • If the person responsible for TDS compliance (e.g., CFO, managing director) changes, the authorized signatory details linked to TAN must be updated.
  • This update is necessary for verification on e-filing and TRACES portals, especially for digitally signed returns and certificates.

Mode and Timing of Updates

  • Updates are submitted through a TAN correction form, which can be filed online or offline via authorized facilitation centers.
  • There is no set schedule, but it is advisable to initiate updates as soon as the change occurs to avoid filing errors, communication failures, or penalties.
